Job Description

Pearson has Associate Scoring Director positions open at all regional scoring centers.

Basic Purpose and Objectives

Functions as project manager for a subject-related open-ended scoring process (e.g., reading, writing, mathematics, or science). Must plan, organize, monitor, and control all aspects of the open-ended scoring process to ensure scoring is completed on time, within bid cost, and with a high level of quality. Responsibilities include leading rangefinding meetings, refining test items and scoring guides, compiling training materials, and training and managing teams of professional scorers.

Organizational Relationships

Direction Received: Receives general direction regarding new or unusual assignments. Draws upon knowledge of PSC policies and procedures in rendering decisions or guidance. Plans own work, exercises independent judgment, and receives guidance from manager on matters of policy, goals, and objectives.

Direction of Others: Provides guidance, coordination, training, and technical assistance to professional scoring personnel concerning all customer requirements and priorities.

Overall Functions and Responsibilities

  • Assists with interviewing candidates as needed.
  • Monitors and supervises/provides regular feedback concerning all aspects of the performance of temporary scoring personnel.
  • Communicates effectively with Scoring Supervisors regarding problems with scorers.
  • In conjunction with HR, resolves personnel issues.
  • Assists in development and refinement of booklets, rubrics/scoring guides, and other materials as requested.
  • With PSC project directors and coordinators, plans scoring process, including estimates for numbers of scorers, project leaders and support staff; plans for flow of materials, room arrangements, equipment, and supplies; procedures for shipping, receiving, storage and handling of materials, etc.
  • Participates in project-staffing planning.
  • Participates in intra-departmental project planning meetings.
  • Performs all activities of a professional scorer as needed.
  • Performs all activities of a scoring supervisor as needed.
  • Participates in rangefinding and compiling of training materials.
  • Reviews existing training sets or develops new ones.
  • Trains scoring supervisors and scorers.
  • Supervises scoring supervisors and scorers.
  • Provides/supervises weekly evaluations of scorer performance.
  • Facilitates open communication among all key staff members on a project.
  • Monitors reliability, accuracy and scoring rates.
  • Suggests ways to improve reliability, accuracy and scoring rates.
  • Monitors project's progress and takes action to ensure project is completed on time.
  • Maintains up-to-date project team lists.
  • Requests copying of training sets and rubrics.
  • Gathers archival copies of training sets for central file.
  • Cleans up supplies at the end of a scoring project. Recycles materials as appropriate.
  • Troubleshoots image scoring problems and assists in resolving difficulties.
  • Coordinates end-of-project compilation of archival materials for own files, central file, and customer records.
  • Evaluates scoring supervisors and scorers and completes HR exit forms. Supervises and approves evaluation of scorers.
  • Contributes to end-of-project summaries/technical reports,
  • Writes annotations as required.
  • Participates in intra-departmental post-project reviews.
  • Functions as an active member of the PSC team to share ideas about process improvement, quality improvement, and competitiveness.
  • Updates ISO 9000 procedures as required.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required. (Degree in education, English, mathematics, science, language or related subject area is desirable.
  • Six (6) months experience in open-ended scoring (mathematics, reading comprehension, writing, primary trait, holistic, mechanics, or any other subject area) preferred.
  • Experience as a scoring supervisor is preferred.

  • Supervisory experience of small groups in the work place is required.
  • PC skills required.
  • Travel required.
