Hawaii Department of Education Selects Pearson PASeries for Assessment Pilot Program

Teachers Will Use PASeries to Guide Instruction and Forecast Growth Toward State Performance Standards

IOWA CITY, Iowa – March 1, 2005 – Pearson Education today announced that its new Pearson PASeries™ (Progress Assessment Series™) formative assessment products have been selected by the Hawaii Department of Education as part of a pilot program for evaluating assessment products. This school year, selected teachers will use PASeries Reading and PASeries Mathematics to measure progress, forecast growth and tie assessment to classroom instruction in two schools for up to 2,000 students.

Developed for grades 3 through 8, PASeries assessments are scientifically valid, reliable and research-based benchmark tests. PASeries tests are designed for completion in one class period and for delivery either on paper or online with quick electronic reporting of results. The first two products, PASeries Reading and PASeries Mathematics, use the scientific Lexile® scale for reading measurement and its new companion Quantile™ scale for mathematics to evaluate student progress.

“We selected Pearson’s new assessment product, PASeries, for inclusion in our evaluation because of its innovative ability to forecast the outcome of our students on our annual state exams,” said Selvin Chin-Chance, director, Test Development Section, Hawaii Department of Education. “This type of formative assessment is what our teachers need to ensure that their students are meeting and exceeding state standards.”

Each PASeries Reading assessment includes a screening test for placement and three progress monitoring tests for each grade. PASeries Mathematics assessments include a screening test for placement, six progress monitoring tests for each grade and diagnostic tests by strand with item analysis reports

“We are pleased to work with Hawaii Public Schools as it evaluates assessment products to determine what would best meet the unique needs of its nearly 200,000 students,” said Douglas Kubach, president and CEO of Pearson Educational Measurement. “Hawaii teachers involved in the pilot will see how they can use the tools in PASeries to map instruction directly to student learning needs and, in the end, help students achieve at higher levels.”

PASeries Reading and PASeries Mathematics are distributed to states and districts by Pearson Educational Measurement and Pearson School Systems. For more information about PASeries, visit www.PearsonPASeries.com.
