What can I do to prepare my student for a standardized test?

The best preparation for a standardized test begins long before the test is administered. Find out which tests are being given and when, marking the test dates on your calendar. Ask whether practice tests or exercises are available that your student can use at home to prepare for the tests. Be sure the student is practiced in the format of the test (e.g., multiple-choice or essay). Determine what the student needs to bring to the test (e.g., pencils, a calculator, and a photo-ID), and prepare these items before the test date. On the day of the test, make sure that your student is well rested and well fed; fatigue and hunger can significantly affect test performance. Finally, don’t emphasize high expectations about your student’s performance. Be positive and encouraging; invite your student to simply do his/her best.
